Market Intelligence Series - Wheat

Context & Background

The seaport is part of a large business conglomerate in India. The port had grown substantially from its humble beginning and became the largest commercial cargo port in India. The port had a marketing team who would reach out to potential and existing customers. However, the organization didn’t have a structured mechanism / channel assessing commodity-wise market forecast and potential cargo traffic that it could attract to its port. In absence of foresight, the marketing team would fruitlessly continue visiting commodity-specific clients, without realizing the non-feasibility the commodity trade and its movement.

Work Executed

Identified the major commodities for trade
Reviewed the production, stock, price and trade scenario
Analyzed potential future scenarios for trade
Analyzed integrated logistics cost for commodity movement from exporter to importer
Forecast of likely cargo movement for the commodity in India
Training of team to refine their search results and analysis

Value Delivered

The forecast revealed no possibility of international trade through India for identified commodity (wheat). It was due to the harvest, stock policy and pricing at that point in time. This saved the port team valuable time of marketing personnel while also saving long-deliberation hours by leadership team on non-existent cargo.
