Building Commercial Confidence to Compete on Value, Not Just Price

Context & Background

In technically sophisticated B2B markets, commercial success depends on more than product knowledge. Employees interacting with customers need to communicate value effectively, understand customer requirements, handle objections, negotiate confidently and differentiate a quality-led offering when competitors attempt to shift the conversation towards price. A soft-skills and commercial capability programme was undertaken for Grundfos employees with special focus on communication, negotiation, lead development and objection handling.

Key Challenges

1A central commercial challenge was helping participants compete on quality and value rather than allowing customer conversations to become primarily price comparisons.
2Participants needed practical capability to communicate persuasively, develop leads, understand customer needs, respond to objections and negotiate without unnecessarily conceding on price.

Work Executed

The programme was designed around communication, lead development, objection handling and negotiation, with a strong emphasis on positioning quality and customer value.
Learning was experiential rather than lecture-led. Participants worked through role plays, simulations, practical customer situations and presentations, followed by facilitated feedback and reflection.
The learning cycle was structured around: Learn → Practice → Receive Feedback → Reflect → Improve.

Value Delivered

Strengthened practical customer communication skills. Improved capability for handling sales objections. Built stronger negotiation confidence. Developed more effective lead-development conversations. Strengthened the ability to position quality and value rather than compete primarily on price. The programme shifted the commercial perspective from matching a lower-priced competitor towards helping customers understand why quality, performance and value justify the proposition.
